Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls State Park, established in 1885 as the first state park in the United States, encompasses the American side of one of the natural world's most dramatic spectacles. The park's three distinct falls — the American Falls (1,060 feet wide), Bridal Veil Falls (56 feet wide), and the massive Horseshoe Falls (2,600 feet wide, straddling the US-Canada border) — collectively discharge approximately 750,000 gallons of water per second during peak summer flow. Visitors arriving at the park's Prospect Point gain an immediate, unobstructed view of the American Falls from a platform extending over the river just 25 feet from the cascade. The Maid of the Mist boat tour, departing from the base of the observation tower, motors directly into the mist rising from the Horseshoe Falls, enveloping passengers in spray and thunder — disposable rain ponchos are provided. Cave of the Winds, located on Goat Island accessible by bridge, takes visitors via elevator to a wooden boardwalk at the base of Bridal Veil Falls, within arm's reach of the cascade on the Hurricane Deck. The park also offers walking paths along the gorge rim to the American Falls overlook and Terrapin Point on the Canadian border, which provides unobstructed Horseshoe Falls views. The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center provides geological context for the falls' formation over 12,000 years. Spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells the flow to its maximum, offer the most powerful visual impact, while illumination of the falls on summer evenings from dusk until 11PM provides a different spectacle. Visiting on weekdays avoids the weekend congestion that is substantial in July and August.
