Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum, housed in a grand Beaux-Arts building designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in stages between 1897 and 1927, stands at the northern edge of Prospect Park in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. With 1.5 million objects across 560,000 square feet of gallery space, it is New York City's second-largest art museum and one of the most encyclopedic art institutions in the United States. The Ancient Egyptian collection on the third floor represents one of the finest outside Egypt itself, including mummies, funerary equipment, shabtis, and monumental stone sculptures spanning three thousand years of Egyptian civilization. The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, a permanent gallery on the fourth floor, is home to Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party (1974–79) — a triangular ceremonial table with 39 elaborately crafted place settings honoring significant women in history, considered a landmark work of feminist art. The fifth-floor American Art galleries include paintings from the 17th century through the 20th, with particular strength in the Hudson River School landscape painters, the Ashcan School realists, and Georgia O'Keeffe. The museum's First Saturdays program — free admission from 5PM to 11PM on the first Saturday of each month, accompanied by music, dance performances, and bar service — has become one of Brooklyn's most beloved monthly cultural events. The museum sits a short walk from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and adjacent to Prospect Park, making it a natural anchor for a full day in Brooklyn.
