Carlsbad Caverns Natural Entrance Trail

The Natural Entrance Trail at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico is a 1.25-mile self-guided descent from the desert surface into one of the world's largest cave systems. The trail begins at the natural cave opening—a massive limestone arch at the surface—and descends approximately 750 feet via a paved switchbacking ramp to the Big Room, 829 feet below the entrance. From the Big Room, visitors exit via elevator (free, included in entry) or continue on the separate Big Room loop. The park entrance is on Carlsbad Caverns Highway (US-62/US-180) south of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Admission is $15 per person (ages 16 and over); children 15 and under enter free.

The descent follows a continuous spiral ramp cut into the cave passage, progressing from full desert daylight at the surface through a twilight zone before entering permanent darkness. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 56°F (13°C) and roughly 90% humidity year-round; the contrast from summer outside temperatures (often exceeding 100°F/38°C) is immediate and dramatic. The paved surface is slightly damp in places due to humidity; closed-toe shoes are mandatory, as sandals and open-toed footwear are prohibited by the park.

From the cave mouth, the route passes the historic bat amphitheater seating area (used during summer evening bat flight programs) before descending into increasingly decorated passages. Key landmarks include the Devil's Spring formation cluster, the Boneyard—a maze of calcite formations—and the main cavern floor where the passage opens into the Big Room, 4,000 feet long and 625 feet wide, one of the largest natural chambers in North America.

The entire Natural Entrance Trail is paved with handrails along most sections. Cave lighting is installed throughout and calibrated to preserve atmosphere. No food or beverages are permitted inside the cave (except sealed water bottles). A gift shop and cafeteria operate in the underground visitor center near the Big Room. Handheld photography is unrestricted; tripods are not permitted. The trail is one-way descent only; the standard return is the free elevator from the Big Room to the surface.
