Conchas Lake State Park

Conchas Lake State Park occupies the shoreline of a 25-mile-long reservoir in the high plains of northeastern New Mexico, approximately 175 miles east of Albuquerque via I-40 and NM-104. Conchas Dam, completed in 1939 by the US Army Corps of Engineers on the Canadian River, created this broad inland lake surrounded by red-rock canyon walls, juniper rangeland, and open high-plains sky — a landscape distinct from any other beach destination in the state.

The park's designated swim beach offers a sandy, gently sloping entry into calm, relatively clear reservoir water. Because Conchas sits at around 4,200 feet elevation and is surrounded by short-grass prairie and scrubland rather than dense forest, sky views from the beach are panoramic and the shoreline feels remote and unhurried compared to more accessible New Mexico reservoirs. The beach suits gentle swimming, wading, and relaxed sunbathing rather than organized water sports, though boating, waterskiing, and fishing are popular on the wider lake.

Fishing is a central draw — Conchas holds bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye, and the marina provides boat rentals and fuel. Cabin rentals within the park offer an alternative to tent and RV camping, making Conchas a destination for visitors wanting a longer stay in a less-developed setting. The campground has electric and non-electric sites positioned close to the shore.

The road from NM-104 is paved and suitable for regular vehicles, and a $5 per vehicle day-use fee is collected at the entrance. Services are limited — the nearest full-service town is Tucumcari, about 34 miles north on US-54. Visitors should stock up on food, fuel, and supplies before making the drive out to the park.
