New Jersey has a humid subtropical/continental transitional climate. The northern Highlands experience colder winters with occasional snow, while the southern Shore and Cape May region has a moderating maritime influence. Summers are warm and humid statewide (85–92°F / 29–33°C in July), with occasional heatwaves. Winters are cold and variable (high 30s–40s°F / 3–8°C in January). Spring and fall are mild and pleasant. Hurricanes and nor'easters can bring heavy rain, wind, and coastal flooding in late summer through early winter.

Best: May–June and September–October
Best Reason: Late spring and early fall bring mild temperatures (60–75°F / 16–24°C), blooming gardens in Cape May, lower hotel rates, and manageable crowds at the Shore. Fall foliage in the highlands peaks in mid-October and is spectacular.
Peak Season: July–August (summer beach season) and holidays
Avoid: January–February
Avoid Reason: January and February are cold, grey, and damp. Many Shore attractions and restaurants close seasonally. Atlantic City operates year-round but beach and boardwalk activity drops sharply.

Spring
Months: Mar–May
March can still be cold and blustery; April brings warming temperatures and blooming gardens in Cape May and Lambertville. By May, the Jersey Shore is open for the season. Cape May's Victorian gardens and the Delaware Water Gap's wildflowers are at their most beautiful.
Summer
Months: Jun–Aug
Peak beach season with warm water temperatures (mid-70s°F / 24°C) by late July. All boardwalks are fully operational. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months — book lodging months in advance. Heat and humidity can be intense inland; the Shore benefits from sea breezes.
Fall
Months: Sep–Nov
September is arguably the best beach month — water is still warm from summer, crowds thin, and prices drop. October brings stunning foliage in the Highlands and Pine Barrens. Cape May's hawk watch (September–November) draws birding enthusiasts from across the country. November turns cool and most Shore businesses wind down.
Winter
Months: Dec–Feb
Atlantic City remains active year-round; the rest of the Shore slows considerably. The Princeton area is lively year-round. December holiday events in Cape May (Victorian Christmas weekends) and Lambertville draw weekend visitors. January and February are the quietest and cheapest months.
