Avon-by-the-Sea Beach

Avon-by-the-Sea is a compact residential beach borough on the central New Jersey coast, situated between the livelier resort towns of Belmar to the south and Bradley Beach to the north, approximately 85 km from New York City. The beach is relatively narrow but well-maintained, with fine pale sand, a moderate east-facing Atlantic swell, and a peaceful local character that contrasts sharply with the more commercialised shores nearby. A stone fishing jetty at the southern end extends into the Atlantic and is one of the most distinctive features of the beach, providing anglers with prime access and creating a small calm pocket of water on its sheltered side that is popular with younger swimmers. The surrounding neighbourhood is characterised by Victorian and Craftsman-era homes, many of which have been converted to bed-and-breakfasts. There are no amusements, boardwalk rides, or commercial establishments on the oceanfront — the shoreline is backed by a simple concrete promenade, keeping the atmosphere quiet and residential. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A beach badge ($10/day) is required for adults. The nearest NJ Transit rail station is Belmar, approximately 10 minutes on foot or by bicycle; NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line from New York Penn Station takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes at approximately $17. The borough's restaurant and nightlife options are very limited; visitors typically walk or cycle to Belmar's Eighth Avenue dining strip for food and drink. Parking is available on residential streets with a limited supply near the beach entrance; the train is a practical alternative on summer weekends when street spaces are exhausted.
