Duke Farms

Duke Farms is a 2,740-acre working conservation estate in Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey, opened to the public in 2012 by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation as a showcase for sustainable land management. The grounds include native wildflower meadows, restored wetlands, working farms, forests, and a network of walking and cycling trails extending more than 18 miles. The Orchid Range — Duke Farms' signature greenhouse complex — houses a rotating collection of tropical orchid species maintained by the estate's horticulture team. The farm buildings and estate infrastructure have been retrofitted with solar panels, geothermal heating, and stormwater management systems that serve as active demonstrations of sustainability practices. Seasonal wildflower meadows bloom from May through September, with bee balm, black-eyed Susan, and native grasses creating dense color across open fields. The Hay Barn serves as an education and event center hosting programs on ecology, food systems, and land conservation. Seasonal programming including guided nature walks, stargazing events, and farm-to-table dinners is offered throughout the year. Bicycles are available to rent on-site and are the most efficient way to cover the estate's extensive trail network. The estate is free to visit Wednesday through Sunday; dogs are not permitted anywhere on the property.
