Asbury Park Boardwalk

Asbury Park's boardwalk runs for half a mile along the Atlantic Ocean in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and is one of the most culturally layered seaside strips on the East Coast. The town's boardwalk and pier were built in the 1880s and experienced decades of decline before a creative revival beginning in the early 2000s transformed Asbury Park into one of New Jersey's most vibrant arts and music destinations. Convention Hall — a 1929 Moorish Revival meeting hall anchoring the southern end of the boardwalk — and the adjacent Paramount Theatre host concerts year-round and give the waterfront a civic grandeur unusual for a beach town. The Stone Pony, where Bruce Springsteen launched his career, sits just off the boardwalk on Ocean Avenue and operates as a concert venue with a national reputation. The boardwalk itself is lined with a distinctive mix of vintage amusement arcade buildings, craft cocktail bars, surf shops, and acclaimed restaurants; Asbury Lanes (a music venue in a converted bowling alley) and Wonder Bar exemplify the town's eclectic character. The beach requires a daily badge ($8) from Memorial Day to Labor Day, purchased at entrance huts along the boardwalk. The mile-long Deal Lake bike path connects the north end of the boardwalk toward Bradley Beach. Asbury Park is directly accessible by NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line train, a 90-minute ride from New York Penn Station.
