Whitefish Lake State Park Beach

Whitefish Lake State Park Beach sits on the southwest shore of Whitefish Lake, just two miles west of downtown Whitefish in northwest Montana. Whitefish Lake is a clear, spring-fed lake set within a forested mountain landscape, and the park's beach is one of the most accessible and well-used public swimming spots in the Flathead Valley. The sandy shoreline is a genuine rarity in Montana's inland lake landscape — a stretch of fine sand edged by shallow, gradually deepening water that makes it particularly inviting for families and younger swimmers. The water is notably clear with a cool blue-green tint reflecting the surrounding mountain forests, and summer temperatures typically range from 65–73°F (18–23°C), reaching their peak in late July and early August. The beach is sufficiently sheltered that wave action remains minimal, concentrating activity in a well-defined swim zone that suits supervised children. The tone is solidly family-friendly; summer weekends draw local families, out-of-town visitors using Whitefish as a Glacier National Park base, and paddlers launching from the boat ramp. On-site amenities include picnic shelters, restrooms, a designated swim area, a boat ramp, and access to kayak rentals from nearby outfitters. The park connects to a loop trail through ponderosa pine forest for post-swim walks. Whitefish's downtown — with restaurants, craft breweries, and shops — is approximately two miles east along Lakeshore Drive.
