Meramec Caverns & Meramec State Park

Meramec Caverns, located near Sullivan in Franklin County, Missouri, is one of the most celebrated cave systems in the Ozarks and sits about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis — roughly a one-hour drive via I-44 West to Exit 230, then south on MO-185. The caverns are set within a limestone ridge above the Meramec River, and their five levels of passages extend more than four miles into the bluff. Guided tours lasting approximately 80 minutes lead visitors through rooms named for their formations: the Stage Curtain room features a 70-foot-wide flowstone curtain, the Wine Table room displays a flat-topped calcium carbonate shelf, and the Jungle Room presents dense stalactite and stalagmite clusters. The cave maintains a constant temperature of approximately 60°F year-round, making it a welcome retreat in summer heat and a comfortable excursion in colder months. Adult admission runs approximately $26; children's rates are lower. Jesse James allegedly used the caverns as a hideout, and this legend is woven into the tour narrative. Adjacent to the cavern entrance, Meramec State Park encompasses 6,896 acres of Ozark riverland with trout fishing in the Meramec River, multi-use trails ranging from easy river-bottom loops to moderate ridgeline routes, and canoe and kayak rentals in season. A recommended day arc starts with the cave tour at opening (typically 9 a.m.), followed by a picnic in the state park, a riverside hike on the Fisher Cave Trail or the longer Wilderness Trail, and a late-afternoon return to St. Louis. Fishing licenses are available at the state park visitor center. Stanton, the small community at the cavern entrance, has limited dining options; packing lunch is advisable. The I-44 corridor also passes Route 66 landmarks between St. Louis and Sullivan for those interested in stopping en route.
