Zingerman's Delicatessen

Zingerman's Delicatessen, founded in 1982 on Detroit Street in Ann Arbor's Kerrytown neighbourhood, is one of the most celebrated delicatessens in the United States and one of Michigan's most iconic food destinations. Founders Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig built the business on a straightforward principle — source genuinely good ingredients and treat every customer with real hospitality — and that philosophy has guided the deli through more than four decades of continuous operation. In 2009, the James Beard Foundation recognised Zingerman's with its America's Classics Award, cementing its status among the great American food institutions.

The centrepiece of the menu is the deli sandwich programme, led by the Number 2 Reuben — hand-carved corned beef, Swiss cheese, house-fermented sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on Jewish rye bread — which appears on national best-sandwich lists with remarkable consistency. Other landmark preparations include hot pastrami on rye, chopped liver on fresh-baked bread, and matzo ball soup made from a traditional recipe. The affiliated Zingerman's Bakehouse supplies the breads and pastries that underpin the sandwich programme, and the quality of those loaves is itself a destination draw.

Beyond the counter service, the deli operates a retail section stocking an extensive selection of imported specialty foods: aged cheeses from across Europe, cured meats, artisan olive oils, estate vinegars, and condiments that reflect the founders' wide-ranging interest in global food traditions. Staff working the retail floor are notably expert and can discuss the provenance of each product with genuine depth.

The environment is casual, busy, and openly enthusiastic about food. Walls are covered in photographs, signed letters, and explanatory placards articulating the philosophy behind the products. Counter queues can be substantial on weekends and during University of Michigan game days, but the experience of moving through the line — observing the counter production, reading the signs, talking with the staff — is itself a distinctive dimension of the visit. Ann Arbor's Kerrytown neighbourhood surrounds the deli with a weekly farmers' market, antique shops, and independent businesses that make the area one of Michigan's most rewarding urban districts for a leisurely morning.
