Great Falls of the Potomac

Great Falls of the Potomac on the Maryland side of the river, accessed via the Great Falls Tavern section of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Potomac, Maryland, displays the most dramatic natural scenery in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The Potomac River drops approximately 76 feet over a series of stepped granite ledges in less than a mile, creating a roaring cascade visible from multiple overlook platforms perched above the gorge. The Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center, housed in a whitewashed 1831 canal tavern building, introduces the history of the C&O Canal with scale models of the lock system and exhibits on mule-drawn boat operations. From the center, a level half-mile walk along the towpath reaches Olmsted Island, accessed via a wooden bridge and boardwalk causeway that projects into the middle of the river. The Olmsted Island overlooks offer unobstructed front-row views of the main falls from a vantage unavailable on the Virginia side — visitors can stand above the gorge with the full cascade churning below and across. The Billy Goat Trail system ranges from the challenging 1.7-mile Section A route scrambling over large boulders along the Mather Gorge rim to gentler riverside walks on Sections B and C. Section A is not suitable for young children due to boulder scrambling above significant drops. Rock climbers access designated routes on the Great Falls cliffs by NPS permit. Spring flooding after heavy rainfall intensifies the falls dramatically; high water in March or April, when Potomac snowmelt combines with rain, transforms the cascade into a thundering spectacle. The Great Falls area is among the most popular recreation destinations near the nation's capital, attracting several hundred thousand visitors annually, and parking at the Maryland entrance fills by 10:00 AM on most spring and fall weekends.
