Monhegan Island

Monhegan Island lies 12 miles off the Pemaquid Peninsula in Maine, reachable exclusively by the Monhegan Boat Line ferry from Port Clyde — a crossing of roughly 70 minutes across open Atlantic water. The island spans approximately 1.7 miles in length and supports a year-round population of fewer than 100 residents, with no paved roads and no regular motor vehicle traffic. Since the 1880s, Monhegan has nurtured an artists' colony of enduring national significance: Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, and Jamie Wyeth are among the painters who worked here, drawn by the intensity of island light and the rugged coastal scenery. Today approximately a dozen resident artists maintain open studios from June through September, and visitors can step into working spaces and purchase original work directly from the artists. The eastern shore of the island presents its most arresting feature — a wall of granite and basalt cliffs rising 160 feet above the open Atlantic. The Cliff Trail traces the edge of these heights for roughly a mile, passing through wind-bent spruce and coastal meadow with surf breaking on the ledges far below; the horizon beyond is open ocean with no land between Monhegan and Europe. The island's interior holds 17 miles of maintained hiking trails through old-growth spruce and fir forest. Cathedral Woods, among the most visited, leads through a grove of towering spruce whose canopy creates a quiet, filtered green light on the moss-carpeted forest floor. The main village on the western shore contains the ferry landing, a general store, two historic inns, the Fish House Art Gallery, and the Monhegan Museum of Art and History — housed in the 1824 keeper's dwelling beside the active 1850 granite lighthouse. Day-trip visitors arrive on the morning ferry and depart by mid-afternoon, leaving roughly four hours on the island. Overnight guests at one of the two inns experience Monhegan after the day crowd departs and the trails and harbor become genuinely quiet. Migrating songbirds use the island as a major stopover point in spring and fall, and Atlantic harbor seals haul out on offshore ledges throughout the summer season.
