Yahoo Falls Trail (Big South Fork)

Yahoo Falls, located within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in McCreary County, Kentucky, marks the site of the tallest waterfall in the state at approximately 113 feet. The Yahoo Falls Trail covers 2.5 miles in a loop configuration with approximately 350 feet of elevation gain, beginning from the Yahoo Falls Scenic Area parking lot off KY-700 near Whitley City, KY 42653. The trailhead is approximately 2.5 hours from Lexington via US-27 S. No permit is required, and the parking area is free of charge. The trail descends from the parking area through a mixed pine and hardwood forest to the base of Yahoo Falls, where a large sandstone rock overhang—a rock shelter—extends beneath the cliff face. This overhang allows hikers to stand beside or behind the falling water without exposure to the full force of the cascade; conditions vary with wind and water volume. The sandstone escarpment also reveals a portion of the Cumberland Escarpment geology that defines this section of the Big South Fork landscape. A wooden boardwalk crosses the damp creek corridor at the falls base, providing secure footing in the perpetually moist environment. From the falls, the trail follows Yahoo Creek upstream before ascending through forested terrain to complete the loop. The surface is primarily natural dirt and rock with some root exposure on the steeper ascent section. An optional spur trail branches off the main loop to Yahoo Arch, a smaller natural sandstone arch visible from a short detour of approximately 0.4 miles. The surrounding forest canopy provides full shade throughout the warmer months. Water is available from the creek but must be treated before consumption. The Big South Fork area contains an extensive backcountry trail network beyond the Yahoo Falls loop; the falls serve as an accessible introduction to the area's canyon and escarpment landscape. The nearest developed campground to the trailhead is the Alum Ford campground.
