Maker's Mark Distillery

Maker's Mark Distillery occupies a 1,000-acre estate in Loretto, Kentucky, and is one of the most scenically intact bourbon distilleries in the state — listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Registered Historic District. The campus of red-shuttered, black-painted buildings perches above a millpond fed by Happy Hollow Creek, a setting visually distinct from the industrial campuses of larger operations. Maker's Mark produces a wheated bourbon in which wheat replaces rye as the secondary grain in the mash bill, yielding the softer, slightly sweeter profile that made the brand a pioneer in premium bourbon marketing when it launched in 1958. Guided tours of 60 to 90 minutes lead visitors through the full production sequence: grain milling, the limestone spring that feeds the water supply, open-top cypress wood fermentation tanks among the few surviving examples in Kentucky, copper pot stills, the barrel filling station, and the multi-story rickhouses where bourbon ages under seasonal temperature fluctuations. At the conclusion of most tours, visitors can dip their own bottle of Maker's Mark in the trademark red wax, selecting from a limited palette of complementary wax colors to seal the bottle personally — a tactile ritual that has become the single most identifiable experience on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
