George's Buffet

George's Buffet is Iowa City's oldest continuously operating bar, having opened in 1942 at 312 Market Street, just a short walk from the University of Iowa campus. The bar is a local institution beloved by generations of students, professors, writers, and long-time Iowa City residents who prize its determinedly unglamorous atmosphere and stubbornly affordable prices. There is no dress code beyond basic decency, and the crowd spans every age group — from college freshmen encountering a proper dive bar for the first time to retired regulars who have been drinking here for decades. The room is small and dim, furnished with a long bar, pool tables, and a handful of booths. There is no design ambition, no curated aesthetic, and no Instagram moment; George's Buffet is a working dive bar doing exactly what it was built to do.

The drinks menu is stripped to fundamentals: cheap domestic and import beers by the can or bottle, a modest selection of well spirits, and simple mixed drinks at prices that feel genuinely old-fashioned. Iowa craft beers do appear on the menu, but the bar's reputation rests firmly on value rather than curation. Music comes from a jukebox stocked with classic rock, country, and whatever the regulars have loaded; there is no live-music programming and no DJ. The bar opens daily at 2:00 PM and runs through last call at 2:00 AM every night of the week. No cover charge is ever collected. The operation is cash-preferred, though cards are accepted.
