Exile Brewing Company

Exile Brewing Company is one of Iowa's most decorated craft breweries, operating a vibrant taproom at 1514 Walnut Street in downtown Des Moines. The brewery opened in 2012 and has since earned national recognition for its rotating lineup of ales, lagers, and seasonal specialties. The taproom occupies a renovated industrial space with exposed brick, high ceilings, and long communal tables that encourage a social, beer-hall atmosphere suited to both casual drinkers and devoted craft-beer enthusiasts. Patrons tend to span college-aged drinkers through older beer aficionados, and the dress code is firmly casual — shorts and T-shirts are entirely standard. The atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming, making Exile accessible to those simply after a quality pint as well as those looking to explore a serious beer programme.

The drinks programme is driven entirely by the brewery's own production. A rotating slate of a dozen or more taps cycles through flagship beers such as Ruthie, a blonde ale, alongside limited seasonal releases and experimental small-batch offerings. The kitchen produces a strong bar-food menu that pairs well with the lineup, making Exile as much a destination for a full meal as for pints alone. There is no cocktail programme; the focus remains squarely on the beer. Music plays as background only, keeping the room lively without impeding conversation.

Doors open Monday through Thursday at 11:00 AM, closing at 10:00 PM. Friday and Saturday hours extend to 11:00 PM, and Sunday the taproom runs noon to 9:00 PM. No cover charge applies at any time. Reservations are generally not required for standard visits, though larger groups may wish to call ahead. The taproom is busiest on Friday evenings and during Iowa Hawkeyes football Saturdays, when the room fills steadily from late afternoon onward. Exile Brewing's combination of quality product, welcoming space, and strong kitchen makes it one of the more complete evening destinations in Des Moines.
