Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair is one of the largest and oldest agricultural state fairs in the United States, drawing over one million visitors to Des Moines each August across an 11-day run at the Iowa State Fairgrounds at 3000 E Grand Ave. The 100-acre grounds have hosted the event since 1886, and the fair remains a defining institution of Iowa culture and agricultural heritage. The iconic Butter Cow — a full-size bovine sculpture carved from more than 600 pounds of butter — has anchored the Agriculture Building since 1911 and draws long viewing queues from opening. The grandstand hosts nightly headline concerts ranging from country to rock, while the free Main Stage presents continuous entertainment throughout the day. Livestock barns showcase champion cattle, hogs, sheep, and horses judged in competitive rings, while the 4-H Building displays award-winning projects from young Iowans statewide. More than 70 foods-on-a-stick vendors line the midway alongside a full carnival with rides scaled for all ages. Pioneer Hall traces Iowa's agricultural timeline with historical implements and photographs. Plan at least six to eight hours to cover the primary buildings, midway, and a grandstand or Main Stage performance; many visitors return on multiple days. Morning hours before 10:00 AM offer the lightest foot traffic and the freshest food selections, while weekend afternoons between noon and 6:00 PM are the most crowded periods. DART shuttle buses from downtown Des Moines provide a faster and cheaper alternative to on-site parking, which costs $15-20 per vehicle.
