The Frederick C. Robie House at 5757 S Woodlawn Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1909 to 1910 for businessman Frederick Robie. It is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Wright's Prairie School period, an architectural approach that drew on the flat landscape of the American Midwest. The house is organized around long horizontal lines: low-pitched roofs with deep cantilevered eaves, bands of thin Roman brick, limestone trim and continuous ribbons of windows. Inside, the main living level flows as a largely open space around a central fireplace, with art-glass windows and doors in geometric patterns, built-in furniture and light fixtures designed by Wright as part of a unified composition. The house later served as a dormitory and administrative space for a seminary and was threatened with demolition in the 1950s, when Wright himself, then in his late eighties, spoke publicly in its defense. It became a National Historic Landmark and was later preserved by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, which carried out a long restoration of the exterior, interior finishes and art glass. In 2019 the house was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the twentieth-century architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Visitors see the house through guided tours that explain the design, the restoration and the Robie family story, with some tours focusing on the art glass or on architectural details; schedules and prices should be confirmed at flwright.org. The visit is interpretive rather than a gallery of objects: the building itself is the exhibit, and the visitor center nearby provides background. The house stands on the University of Chicago campus edge, within walking distance of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures and the Chicago Pile-1 site, which makes it easy to combine with other Hyde Park historic stops in a single day. Tours typically last about an hour.
