Sunset Beach, at 59-104 Kamehameha Highway near Haleiwa, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, is a wide, long stretch of golden sand about 35 miles northwest of Waikiki. It is a core part of the so-called Seven Mile Miracle, the string of famed surf beaches along the North Shore. The beach is broad and gently sloping, and the sand is fine and soft, with clear blue water. Conditions change dramatically with the season. From May to September, the ocean is often calm and swimmable, suitable for sunbathing, bodyboarding, and gentle swims, and the beach is relatively quiet. From November to February, large swells arrive from the North Pacific, producing powerful waves, strong rip currents and a dangerous shore break; the beach hosts international surf competitions, including events of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which draw crowds of spectators. The atmosphere is relaxed in summer and electric in winter, with surfers, photographers and visitors lining the sand to watch. Because the beach is exposed, trade winds and swell are constant factors, and the sand can be steep at the shoreline. Amenities include lifeguards, restrooms and showers across the highway at Sunset Beach Park, and a wide beach with plenty of space. Parking is roadside along Kamehameha Highway and in small lots, and can be tight during winter surf events. Food is not sold on the sand, but shrimp trucks, shave ice stands and cafes in Haleiwa and Pupukea are a short drive away. Access is by car on Route 83, and TheBus services stop along the highway. Sunset itself is the signature draw here, when the sky glows over the water, and the beach is a favorite for photographers and couples. Swimmers should check flags and avoid winter surf unless highly experienced.
