Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta preserves and interprets the birthplace, life, and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the foremost leader of the American civil rights movement. Administered by the National Park Service, the site encompasses several locations along Auburn Avenue NE within walking distance of the main visitor center at 450 Auburn Ave NE.

The visitor center houses a museum with exhibits tracing the civil rights movement from the conditions of Jim Crow segregation through the landmark legislation of the 1960s. From the visitor center, timed passes — issued free of charge at the desk from the 9 AM opening — provide access to the Birth Home at 501 Auburn Ave NE, a restored Queen Anne-style house where King was born in 1929 and lived until age 12. Ranger-led tours of approximately 25 minutes guide visitors through the period-furnished rooms, sharing details about King's childhood and the social world of Atlanta's African American middle class in the early twentieth century. Birth home passes are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and can be exhausted by mid-morning on busy days.

A short walk from the visitor center stands Ebenezer Baptist Church, where three generations of the King family preached and where Dr. King served as co-pastor. The historic sanctuary is open for self-guided visits. King's marble tomb, flanked by an eternal flame and a reflecting pool, is located in Freedom Plaza between the visitor center and the church.

The full visit — museum, birth home tour, church, and Freedom Plaza — typically takes two to three hours. The entire site is free; no admission is charged for any component. The surrounding Sweet Auburn district, once a thriving hub of African American commerce and culture, provides additional historical context. MARTA King Memorial Station on the Blue and Green lines is a ten-minute walk west along Auburn Avenue.
