Cyclists can ride the North Shore of Lake Apopka on gravel levees and the 11-mile wildlife drive, entering at 2850 Lust Road in Apopka. Bikes are welcome every day, including days when vehicles are not allowed, and the free access makes it one of the cheapest adventure outings near Orlando. The terrain is flat but gravel, so hybrid or mountain bikes are better than road bikes. The route is exposed to sun and wind, so carry water and start early, particularly from May to September. Birdlife is exceptional, with raptors, ducks, wading birds and alligators along the canals; bring binoculars. Bike rentals are not available at the site, so riders bring their own or rent in Winter Garden near the West Orange Trail. The Lake Apopka Loop Trail also connects to the paved trails around Magnolia Park. Check the district page for any closures after storms. Mosquitoes are heavy in summer, and there is no shade. Cell coverage can be patchy, so tell someone the planned route.
