Nemours Estate

Nemours Estate in Wilmington, Delaware, is the former home of Alfred I. du Pont, completed in 1910 and designed in the Louis XVI style by the architectural firm Carrère and Hastings — the same office responsible for the New York Public Library. The 77-room mansion, set on 300 acres of the Brandywine Valley north of Wilmington, is among the most significant examples of early 20th-century Gilded Age domestic architecture in the eastern United States. The estate opened to the public in 1977 following the death of Alfred's widow Jessie Ball du Pont and is now administered by the Nemours Foundation.

Visitors access the estate exclusively through timed guided tours, which depart on the hour and are limited to small groups. The mansion tour moves through the main floor reception rooms — including the drawing room, dining room, billiard room, and library — all retaining their original furnishings, European decorative arts, family portraits, and du Pont family silver accumulated over decades of residence. A chauffeur's garage adjacent to the mansion displays a collection of Alfred du Pont's vintage automobiles.

The formal French garden stretching south of the mansion is the estate's most dramatic feature: a one-mile grand allée lined with reflecting pools, bronze fountains, clipped hedgerows, and sculpted topiary descending toward a sunken garden and Colonnade at the far end. The scale and formality of the design, inspired by the gardens of Versailles, is remarkable in a Delaware setting and rarely fully appreciated until experienced in person. Children under the age of seven are not permitted on the mansion tour due to the presence of fragile original furnishings. Garden-only tickets are available for visitors who wish to skip the interior tour. Advance tickets purchased online are strongly recommended, particularly in spring and fall foliage season when tours sell out regularly.
