West Rock Ridge State Park — Judges Cave Trail

West Rock Ridge State Park spans a six-mile traprock escarpment rising above the cities of New Haven and Hamden in south-central Connecticut, offering accessible woodland hiking within 15 minutes of Yale University. The primary trailhead is at West Rock Avenue in New Haven, with additional access points in Hamden along Wintergreen Avenue; no entrance fee is charged and no permit is required. The signature cultural feature on the ridge is Judges Cave, a rock outcropping where two English regicide judges — Edward Whalley and William Goffe — sheltered in 1661 after fleeing England for signing the warrant for the execution of King Charles I. A bronze plaque marks the site, which is accessible on the main trail. The ridge reaches 627 feet at its highest point, with clear-day views across New Haven Harbor to Long Island Sound and east toward Sleeping Giant State Park. A network of color-blazed trails traverses the 1,500-acre park over three to five miles of loop options on predominantly traprock ledge and woodland dirt surface. The terrain involves moderate climbing with some exposed ledge sections on the upper ridge; shade is limited on the wind-swept summit area. An access road bisects the park at the summit, providing a paved alternative route. The road is gated from November through April, so winter hikers must account for the additional walking distance. No reliable water sources exist on the trail; carrying at least one liter is advised. The Wintergreen Falls area in the Hamden section of the park is reachable via a connecting trail from the northern access point. Deer ticks are present throughout the scrubby understory from April through November.
