Colorado Weather & Climate Guide 2025

Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Colorado.

Colorado is a Rocky Mountain state renowned for world-class skiing, stunning national parks, and vibrant outdoor culture. From the soaring peaks of the Rockies to the red rock canyons of the southwest, Colorado offers some of America's most dramatic landscapes and outdoor adventures.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

April-May (mud season makes many trails impassable), November (shoulder season with limited activities and poor conditions for both hiking and skiing)

Spring mud season closes many unpaved mountain roads and trails making hiking difficult. November sits between ski and hiking seasons with limited activities.

Climate Overview

Colorado has a semi-arid continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. The state's extraordinary elevation range (3,315 to 14,440 feet) creates dramatically different microclimates - Denver has mild four seasons while mountain towns experience heavy snow and year-round cold nights. Summers are warm and dry at lower elevations with frequent afternoon thunderstorms at high altitudes. Colorado receives more sunshine than Miami or San Diego.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Highly variable weather with late snow possible at all elevations. Wildflowers bloom in April-May at lower elevations while high mountain trails remain snow-covered through late May or June. Known as mud season.

Tips: Pack versatile layers and waterproof boots for muddy trails. Best for wildflower viewing at lower elevations and avoiding summer crowds.

☀️ Summer

Jun-Aug

Warm and mostly sunny with low humidity at all elevations. Afternoon thunderstorms common, especially above treeline June-August. Peak season for hiking, rafting, cycling, and all outdoor activities.

Tips: Start hikes early to avoid afternoon lightning above treeline. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen generously - UV is significantly stronger at altitude. Carry rain gear for afternoon storms.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

Colorado's most spectacular season with golden aspen foliage in September-October. Cooler temperatures and fewer crowds than summer make this ideal for hiking. Early snow possible in mountains by October.

Tips: Visit mid-September for peak aspen color especially in Aspen, Crested Butte, and around Kebler Pass. Book lodging early as fall foliage season is very popular. Pack warm layers for cold mornings.

❄️ Winter

Dec-Feb

Colorado's famous ski season with abundant powder snow at resorts. Denver stays relatively mild with 300+ sunny days. Mountain roads can be treacherous without AWD. Peak season for Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, and 25+ other resorts.
