Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery

Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery has been a cornerstone of Boulder's craft beer culture since its founding in 1993, operating as an independently owned neighborhood brewpub on the Pearl Street Mall that predates Boulder's emergence as one of America's premier craft beer cities. The brewery produces all of its beers on-site in small batches, rotating through dozens of styles annually — from crisp pilsners and wheat beers in summer to robust porters, stouts, and barleywines in winter months.

The craft beer sampler ($12) is the standard introduction to the brewery's range — four to five glasses of currently available beers chosen by the server or the guest, an efficient way to navigate a tap list that typically includes 15 to 20 house-brewed options. The pub burger ($14) is an honest, well-made bar burger that has been on the menu in some form since the early years, while the black bean burrito ($13) represents Mountain Sun's commitment to vegetarian-friendly pub food — a Boulder-specific expectation that the restaurant has met consistently for decades.

The dining room occupies a comfortable, lived-in space on Pearl Street with wood paneling, low lighting, and the kind of unpretentious atmosphere that comes from being a genuinely neighborhood-focused operation in a college town. The pub fills with a democratic mix of University of Colorado students, long-time Boulder residents, visiting beer enthusiasts, and tourists who found it in Boulder guidebooks.

Mountain Sun does not accept credit cards — cash only, a policy that has remained in place since opening and that adds to the pub's old-school character. The Southern Sun sibling location operates in South Boulder for guests on that side of the city.
