California is America's most populous and diverse state, stretching 1,300 kilometers along the Pacific Coast from the Oregon border to Mexico. It encompasses everything from sun-drenched beaches and towering redwood forests to the dramatic Sierra Nevada mountains and the arid Mojave Desert.

California's climate spans five distinct zones across 800 miles of coastline and dramatic inland geography. Coastal Southern California (Los Angeles, San Diego) enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and mild wet winters — among the most pleasant year-round climates in the world. Coastal Northern California (San Francisco, Monterey) is cooler and foggier, with San Francisco's famous summer marine layer surprising visitors expecting sunshine. The Sierra Nevada brings alpine conditions and world-class skiing November-April. The Central Valley bakes in summer but is mild in spring and fall.
