The Exploratorium is a hands-on science museum on Pier 15 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1969 by physicist Frank Oppenheimer, it moved to its waterfront home in 2013 and now fills a large indoor gallery and an outdoor terrace with more than 600 interactive exhibits. Rather than glass cases and labels, the museum invites visitors to touch, build, test and observe, with topics ranging from light, sound and perception to human behavior, tides and the bay itself.

The main galleries are organized by theme. Visitors can explore optical illusions, stand in distorted rooms, test reaction time, watch fog and clouds form, experiment with magnets and electricity, and study the living Bay through the Observatory Gallery, whose floor-to-ceiling windows look out on the water and the Bay Bridge. The Tactile Dome, a pitch-dark sensory tunnel that visitors crawl through by touch alone, requires a separate reservation and is among the most talked-about experiences. The museum also hosts staff known as Explainers who help visitors with exhibits.

A typical visit takes three to four hours, and families with children often stay longer. The best views are from the outdoor terrace and the windows of the Observatory Gallery, which frame the bay and the skyline. On Thursday evenings the museum runs After Dark, an adults-only event for ages 18 and over, with cocktails, music and themed activities, and a different, quieter mood from the daytime crowds of school groups and families.

Crowds are heaviest on weekends, school holidays and summer afternoons, when popular exhibits develop lines. Weekday mornings, especially outside school field trip season, are the calmest. The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday, so planning around its schedule matters, and advance timed tickets are recommended. The Pier 15 location is a short walk from the Ferry Building and from the Embarcadero BART and Muni station.
