Tombstone and Bisbee

Tombstone and Bisbee are two of Arizona's most historically significant small towns, sitting roughly 30 kilometers apart in the rolling grasslands and sky-island mountain ranges of Cochise County, approximately 310 kilometers southeast of Phoenix via Interstate 10 east and State Route 80 south. Together they form a coherent double-destination day trip covering the Wild West era and Victorian copper-boom Arizona with remarkable authenticity and minimal tourist artificiality.

Tombstone was incorporated in 1880 after prospector Ed Schieffelin struck silver in the surrounding hills, reaching its violent peak in October 1881 with the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral — a 30-second exchange of fire between the Earp brothers and the Clanton-McLaury faction that became the most mythologized event in American Western history. Today Allen Street's main commercial district is a living-history attraction. The O.K. Corral site at 326 Allen Street runs reenactment shows daily at noon and 2pm ($15 per person). The Bird Cage Theatre at 535 Allen Street, preserved largely intact from its 1881 opening, retains original furnishings, bullet holes, and a working bar and is one of the most authentic saloon interiors in the American West. Boot Hill Graveyard on US-80 north of town contains original graves of gunfight victims and outlaws marked with wooden headboards.

Big Nose Kate's Saloon at 417 Allen Street, built in the Grand Hotel basement in 1880, is Tombstone's most atmospheric drinking establishment. Lunch at Tombstone's saloon grills and cafes typically runs $15–25 per person.

Bisbee, 30 kilometers south via SR-80, occupies a narrow canyon in the Mule Mountains at 1,560 meters elevation. From 1880 to 1975 it was one of the largest copper-producing cities in the American West. The Lavender Pit open-cut mine is visible from SR-80 on the approach to town. The Queen Mine Tour ($13 per adult) takes visitors underground via original mine transport, guided by retired miners, departing from the AZ-80 mine entrance at scheduled times throughout the day.

Bisbee's Old Town district along Brewery Gulch, Main Street, and Tombstone Canyon Road contains Victorian-era commercial buildings housing galleries, cafes, bookshops, and antique stores. Cafe Cornucopia on Brewery Gulch is highly regarded for lunch and dinner. The Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate housed in the 1897 Phelps Dodge General Office, provides a thorough account of the region's copper-era history.
