Goldfield Ghost Town

Goldfield Ghost Town sits at the base of the Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction, Arizona — one of the state's most dramatic and legend-laden mountain ranges, home to the folkloric Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. The original Goldfield mining camp boomed briefly from 1893 to 1898, when approximately $3 million in gold was extracted from the surrounding ore deposits, then collapsed rapidly when the ore played out. The current attraction is a recreated 1890s Western town built on the original townsite, combining genuine historical elements including the original mine itself with the entertainment infrastructure of a tourist destination. The centerpiece activity is the mine tour — a guided 25-minute underground experience through the original mine shaft, illuminated to reveal ore veins in the surrounding rock, with guides explaining 19th-century extraction methods and the legends surrounding the Superstition Mountains' gold. Above ground, a narrow gauge railroad loops around the property with views of the Superstition Mountain ridgeline and the Sonoran Desert foothills vegetation. The Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon occupies a period building and serves food throughout the day. Gunfight reenactments are staged on the outdoor main street boardwalk on a daily schedule. The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum, adjacent to the ghost town, documents the legends and history of the Superstition Mountains, the mysterious prospector Jacob Waltz (the 'Lost Dutchman'), and the many treasure seekers who have died searching these mountains over the past 150 years. A reptile exhibit houses native rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, and Sonoran desert tortoises in educational displays.
