Chilkoot Charlie's, universally known to Anchorage residents as Koot's, has occupied the same sprawling building on Spenard Road since the 1970s and stands as one of the most storied and recognisable bars in Alaska. The venue is an institution rather than a single bar: four separate bar rooms fan out across the property, each with its own character — from the sawdust-strewn floors of the main room to the cramped intimacy of the side stages and the high-energy dancing areas that come alive on weekend nights. The exterior is a landmark in its own right, covered in mismatched signs, mounted trophies, and decades of accumulated eccentricity that signal immediately that Koot's operates by its own rules. The crowd is broadly Alaskan in the most authentic sense: locals of all ages, seasonal workers, fishing and oil industry personnel, college students from the nearby University of Alaska Anchorage, and curious visitors who have heard the bar's reputation on the road. Dress code is essentially nonexistent; Koot's welcomes everyone from those just off a shift to those dressed for a proper night out. The atmosphere shifts considerably between rooms — one may host a raucous dance floor while another offers a quieter environment for pool and drinks. Live music is staged several nights per week, with local rock, country, and cover bands taking the smaller stages while DJ sets power the dancing areas on Friday and Saturday nights. The music programming skews toward classic rock, country, and high-energy crowd-pleasers. Weekend nights draw the biggest crowds, with the bar filling steadily from around 9pm and peaking after midnight. The bar programme leans toward the unpretentious: domestic and Alaskan draft beers at $5 to $8, well cocktails, shots, and a handful of specialty drinks. Cover charges range from nothing on weeknights to around $10 for headline events. Koot's does not take reservations; lines for the main entrance can form on busy Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm.
