Anchorage Museum

The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center is the largest museum in Alaska, housed in a 195,000-square-foot building at 625 C Street in downtown Anchorage. Its permanent galleries span Alaska's human and natural history — from ancient Indigenous cultures to the oil industry's transformation of the state — alongside significant contemporary art collections. The Alaska Gallery on the ground floor is the centerpiece: it traces 10,000 years of Alaska history through immersive dioramas, artifact cases, and multimedia installations moving from prehistoric hunters to modern Anchorage. The Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center, a permanent presence in the museum, houses hundreds of Alaska Native objects on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, staffed by Alaska Native cultural experts who speak with visitors about specific pieces. The Art of the North gallery features paintings, prints, and sculpture by artists who documented Alaska from the 18th century onward, including Sidney Laurence's large-scale Denali oil paintings that anchor the collection. A dedicated Discovery Center on the lower level offers hands-on STEM exhibits for children alongside a working planetarium. The museum cafe sources local Alaskan ingredients and overlooks the public street-level garden on C Street. Rotating special exhibitions address contemporary issues including Arctic climate science, Indigenous land rights, and northern exploration history. The Anchorage Museum is a reliable option on Alaska's frequent rainy days and a serious institution requiring at minimum two hours; the Alaska Gallery alone merits 90 minutes of dedicated attention.
