Tintagel Castle, Cornwall

Tintagel Castle sits on a wild headland on the north Cornwall coast, England, and is tied by legend to King Arthur. English Heritage cares for the site, which combines 13th-century castle ruins with traces of a high-status settlement from the 5th and 6th centuries. A path descends from the entrance to the cliffs, where a steel footbridge opened in 2019 spans a 35-metre chasm to the island. Steps lead up to the ruined walls, the Great Hall remains, terraces and a walled garden, all with wide views across the Atlantic. At beach level Merlin's Cave cuts through the headland and can be explored at low tide. The nearby village of Tintagel has King Arthur's Great Halls, a granite hall with Arthurian stained glass. Photographers favour the footbridge, the clifftop path south of the castle and the beach at low tide, particularly in the soft light of early morning. Visits take about two hours. Crowds build from late morning, and summer and school holidays are busiest, so arriving early gives the quietest conditions. Shoulder seasons in spring and autumn combine good light with fewer people. Wind and rain arrive quickly on the headland, so extra layers are useful, and the steep, wet steps make sturdy footwear important. Cornwall's coastal path offers further walking in both directions from the castle, including routes toward Boscastle.
