God's Own Junkyard, London

God's Own Junkyard is a warehouse in Walthamstow, east London, housing the world's largest private collection of vintage neon and LED signs accumulated over decades by neon artist Chris Bracey and his family. Bracey, who died in 2014, created neon artworks for films including Eyes Wide Shut, Batman, and Moulin Rouge, and the warehouse contains thousands of signs spanning enormous glowing angels, retro American diner displays, British seaside signs, and bespoke neon artworks in every conceivable colour and configuration. The Rolling Scones café operates within the warehouse space, allowing visitors to take tea or coffee surrounded by the extraordinary glowing collection. Visiting requires navigating into the Ravenswood Industrial Estate near Walthamstow Central station — the approach through the industrial estate under railway arches heightens the surprise of the neon paradise within. The space operates exclusively on Friday afternoons and Saturday and Sunday full hours, making advance time planning essential. Entry is free. The interior produces an all-encompassing, cinema-like quality of coloured light that cannot be replicated by photography — visitors are typically struck by the warmth and saturation of light that floods the space. The family continues to add to the collection and creates bespoke neon commissions from the same premises. The signs range from historic pieces dating to the 1950s to contemporary pieces and include original film props. Photography is welcomed and encouraged.
