Abu Dhabi is the capital emirate of the United Arab Emirates, blending ultramodern architecture with rich Bedouin heritage. Home to iconic landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, it offers world-class culture, luxury hospitality, and thrilling desert adventures.
Traditional markets
Where locals shop and travellers find treasures.
Iranian Souq (Al Mina Souq)
The most atmospheric traditional market in Abu Dhabi, located in the historic Al Mina (port) district. The Iranian Souq is a labyrinth of shops selling Persian ceramics, carpets, spices, gold, perfumes, textiles, and handicrafts. Iranian traders have dominated this market for generations. The smell of oud incense, saffron, and rose water fills the air. Bargaining is expected and welcomed.
Al Mina Fish, Vegetable and Meat Market
One of the most remarkable market experiences in the Gulf — a vast complex housing separate fish, vegetable, fruit, and meat halls. The fish market is extraordinary: an enormous variety of freshly landed Gulf seafood including hamour (grouper), kingfish, tuna, hammour, shrimp, crab, and lobster. Fishermen bring their catch directly from the boats. This is where restaurant chefs and Abu Dhabi residents shop.
Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre
A sprawling market complex known as the 'gold market' of Abu Dhabi's city centre. The lower floors have hundreds of small shops selling gold, jewellery, textiles, and traditional goods at local prices. Less touristy than souq areas and popular with UAE residents. A genuine slice of daily commercial life in the city.
Khalidiyah Mall
A popular city-centre mall serving local residents with a good range of mid-market brands, a food court, and supermarket. Less touristy than Yas Mall — a genuine Abu Dhabi daily life experience.
