Reconstruction of Yaroslav the Wise's 11th-century city gate

The Golden Gate stands at Volodymyrska Street 40A in central Kyiv, Ukraine, close to the Zoloti Vorota metro station. It commemorates the main ceremonial gateway of the 11th-century city of Yaroslav the Wise, constructed around 1037 as part of a ring of earthen ramparts and timber-and-stone fortifications that enclosed the capital of Kyivan Rus. Medieval chronicles describe the gate as being crowned by the Church of the Annunciation, and the name is generally understood to echo the Golden Gate of Constantinople, expressing the ambitions of the Rus ruling dynasty to match Byzantine grandeur.

The original gate passed through many hands. It was damaged in the Mongol assault of 1240, which brought down much of Kyiv's old defensive circuit, and over the following centuries it fell into disrepair and was gradually buried. In the early 19th century it was cleared of rubble and shored up with brick supports to protect the surviving walls, and archaeological work in the 1830s and again in the 20th century recorded its plan. These excavations showed the lower parts of the original masonry, built of stone and thin Byzantine-style brick known as plinth, which formed the arch and side walls.

In 1982, for the 1,500th anniversary celebrations of Kyiv, a full reconstruction was built over and around the surviving remains. The reconstruction is controversial among architectural historians because it relied on limited evidence for the upper structure, and it is commonly described as an interpretive imagining rather than a facsimile. The new building encloses the original ruins, which are preserved inside as an exhibit, and it has a small gilded Church of the Annunciation on top. Visitors can view the original masonry and a short exhibition on the gate and the fortifications of Yaroslav's city.

The museum is small and the visit is brief. The surrounding Yaroslaviv Val area and the small park in front of the gate are popular with locals, and the monument to Yaroslav the Wise stands nearby. Interpretation is largely focused on the fortification system, medieval Kyiv's layout and the chronology of the gate from the 11th century to the reconstruction.
