Fale Tuvalu Backpacker House is positioned in the northern stretch of Fongafale island, roughly 3 km north of the Vaiaku government area and approximately 4 km from Funafuti International Airport. This part of the island has a pronounced working-community character: outrigger canoes rest on the lagoon shore, fish dry on racks in front yards, and the pace of life is set by tides and weather rather than schedules. The setting is as close to daily Tuvaluan life as any visitor accommodation on the island.
The building draws on traditional Tuvaluan fale design — an open-sided structure with a corrugated iron roof and timber framing — updated with practical additions including secure metal lockers, insect screens, and basic electric lighting. Dormitory sleeping is arranged on bunk frames under the shared roof, with a separate private room available for those preferring more seclusion. Shared outdoor shower and toilet facilities are maintained in serviceable condition. The communal kitchen is equipped with a gas burner, refrigerator, basic cookware, and a cutting board for guests who source their own ingredients from the central market.
There is no dining service, pool, spa, or fitness facility. The main shared space — an open common area with hammocks and low tables — functions as the social centre of the property, where guests exchange information and make plans. Mobile data reception in northern Fongafale is serviceable but weaker than in the central island area.
Host Selu is the property's defining asset. A lifelong Funafuti resident with extensive connections among the island's fishing community, he can introduce guests to boat operators willing to take passengers on early-morning fishing trips, advise on tide-safe snorkelling spots along the northern lagoon shore, and share knowledge of the outer atolls that few formal guides possess.
