Hôtel Sarakawa

Hôtel Sarakawa has operated on Avenue Sarakawa in Lomé since the 1970s and remains one of the city's most recognisable beachfront landmarks. The property takes its name from the village of Sarakawa in northern Togo, homeland of the late President Gnassingbé Eyadéma, and was for decades the preferred accommodation for visiting heads of state, regional diplomats, and high-level trade delegations. That heritage of statecraft lends the hotel a formal bearing that continues today.

The architectural style blends low-rise Tropicana modernism—wide overhanging eaves, wraparound terraces, and louvred shutters—with interiors updated across successive renovations to include contemporary fixtures while preserving the property's period character. Gardens extend from the main building to the beachfront, shaded by coconut palms and bougainvillea. The centrepiece is a lagoon-form pool bordered by sun loungers and a poolside bar; a gate at the garden's far edge opens directly onto the Gulf of Guinea beach.

Room types run from garden-view standards to ocean-facing suites; the latter include a private terrace and bathtub alongside standard amenities of flat-screen television, climate control, and minibar. A formal restaurant serves Togolese and French cuisine to a high standard; fresh crayfish, capitaine fish, and grilled meats feature prominently on the menu. Breakfast is a continental-African hybrid buffet.

Conference facilities accommodate up to 300 delegates across two purpose-built halls, and a resident business services team handles audio-visual equipment, interpretation, and banquet catering. A spa and fitness centre occupy a dedicated wing. Airport transfer services to Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport—approximately 10 kilometres by road—are available through the concierge.
