Maubisse is approximately 70 kilometres south of Dili, a two-hour drive through mountain roads that climb steeply through coffee plantations and terraced agricultural fields.
The building is a low, pitched-roof colonial structure with thick rendered walls, a covered veranda, and a garden of mature tropical trees — a form characteristic of Portuguese administrative outposts across Asia and Africa. The interior retains period-appropriate tiled floors and simply furnished rooms that prioritise functionality over luxury. The mountain climate means nights can be genuinely cold by tropical standards, dropping significantly below daytime temperatures; rooms have blankets but central heating is absent, so warm clothing is essential regardless of what time of year you visit.
