Khao Sok Raft Houses (Cheow Lan Lake)

Cheow Lan Lake sits deep inside Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province, approximately 65 kilometres northeast of Takua Pa and 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Surat Thani town. Reaching the raft houses requires a transfer to Ratchaprapha Dam — the main pier — followed by a longtail boat crossing of 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the mooring point. The lake was created in 1982 when the Ratchaprapha Dam flooded an ancient valley, leaving dense rainforest intact on the ridgelines and exposing a landscape of limestone karst towers rising up to 900 metres directly from the water surface. The setting is among the most visually striking in Southeast Asia, and dawn mist on the lake is the defining image of Khao Sok.

Raft house accommodation consists of simple wooden platforms and bamboo-frame structures moored against the karst walls or anchored in open bays. Architecture is deliberately basic: the structures are functional floating buildings, not resorts. Rooms are timber-frame or bamboo cabins with solid beds, mosquito nets, and fan cooling. There is no air conditioning, no minibar, and privacy is limited by thin walls — the trade-off for waking up to an unobstructed view of the limestone cliffs reflected on still water.

Most operators sell packages on a full-board basis. Meals are cooked fresh by the raft house team and served communally: three Thai meals per day — rice, stir-fries, curries, and lake fish — with simpler breakfasts of fruit, toast, and instant coffee or tea. Soft drinks and beer are usually available for separate purchase; alcohol stocks are limited so guests who want something specific should bring it.

Activities are the central draw. Guided kayaking reaches caves set into the limestone formations, including Coral Cave and the longer Nam Talu Cave route for guests who pre-book park permits. Longtail boat sunrise tours cover the most photogenic sections of the lake before the mist burns off. Guided jungle treks with national park rangers explore old-growth Khao Sok rainforest, one of the oldest in the world. Night safari boat rides along the lakeshore offer reliable sightings of wildlife including hornbills, macaques, and occasionally tapirs or gaurs. Swimming directly from the raft platforms is commonplace.

There is no spa, gym, fitness centre, or business facilities. Electricity is supplied by a petrol generator for a few hours each evening, typically cutting off around 10 pm; phones and cameras can be charged in that window. Mobile signal is absent at most mooring points. Multiple independent family operators run raft houses across the lake under separate names; no single brand controls the category, and the experience varies slightly by operator. Advance booking is strongly recommended for the November-to-April dry season.
