Ang Ka Nature Trail

The Ang Ka Nature Trail is a 360-meter elevated boardwalk looping through one of Southeast Asia's highest cloud forest ecosystems, located near the summit of Doi Inthanon at approximately 2,500 meters elevation in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. The boardwalk is deliberately short to minimize human disturbance in this fragile and scientifically significant habitat, managed as a botanical study area by the Royal Forest Department. Around 20 numbered interpretive stations are positioned along the route, guiding visitors through the forest and pointing out key species including pitcher plants, club mosses, diverse ferns, and a remarkable variety of epiphytic orchids clinging to the branches of ancient trees. The trees themselves are remarkable—some with trunks several meters in girth, entirely encased in bryophytes and hanging gardens of moss and lichen that accumulate over centuries in the near-constant moisture at this altitude. The forest floor is a saturated carpet of sphagnum moss, and the boardwalk keeps visitors above this wet ground while also protecting the root systems below. Temperatures here remain cool throughout the year, dropping to near 0°C on December and January nights and rarely exceeding 20°C even at the height of the Thai summer. In the cool season mornings, frost sometimes forms on the boardwalk railings. Birdwatchers consider Ang Ka one of Thailand's premier high-altitude birding sites, with species such as the Gould's sunbird, green-tailed sunbird, blue whistling thrush, and Doi Inthanon subspecies of white-browed shortwing regularly observed around the boardwalk. The trailhead is located on the main park road approximately 1 kilometer before the summit parking area and shares the same park entrance fee. The walk takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes at a gentle pace.
