Kata Noi Beach

Kata Noi Beach is a compact sheltered cove in the Karon District of southern Phuket, Thailand, approximately 18 kilometres southwest of Phuket Town. The beach sits directly south of the larger Kata Beach, separated from it by a rocky headland. The Thai word noi means small, accurately reflecting the intimate scale of the bay, which extends approximately 500 metres of fine pale sand framed by jungle-covered hills on both flanks and an open view out to the Andaman Sea.

The sand is among the finest on Phuket's western coast — soft, clean, and white — and the water colour ranges from pale aquamarine at the shoreline to clear blue at depth. The snorkelling around the rocky southern headland is consistently good, with coral formations and reef fish accessible within a short swim from the beach. The relatively sheltered bay and gentle gradient produce calmer surf than the neighbouring beaches at Kata and Karon during the high season, making Kata Noi particularly well suited to families and less confident swimmers. During the southwest monsoon from May through October, surf and rip currents develop and swimming becomes inadvisable.

The Boathouse hotel occupies the northern end of the cove and has a well-regarded beachfront restaurant; its long-standing presence prevents the northern headland from being developed as resort frontage. A modest cluster of sunbed and umbrella vendors operates in the central section of the beach. Several small restaurants and food stalls stand on the roadside behind the beach.

Access is by a winding road from the main Kata Beach area or directly from Phuket's ring road. A small car park serves day visitors. Kata Noi's relative obscurity — it terminates at the end of a narrow road rather than fronting a resort strip — keeps it noticeably less crowded than Kata or Karon even during the peak December–February period. The beach is rarely mentioned on budget itineraries, and visitors often have the southern section almost entirely to themselves outside of morning peak hours.
