Railay Beach

Railay is a small peninsula in Krabi Province connected to the mainland by towering limestone cliffs on three sides, making boat access the only way in or out. This geographical isolation has kept the area car-free and relatively low-key despite its spectacular setting. Four distinct beaches serve different purposes: Railay West is the main arrival point, with a sandy beach flanked by longtail boat moorings and most of the accommodation; Railay East is a mangrove-fringed shoreline unsuitable for swimming but lined with restaurants and bungalows; Phra Nang Beach, reached by a short cliff path around the southern headland, is consistently rated among the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, with a Khmer-era princess cave and shrine at its base; and Tonsai Beach, accessible at low tide or by a short scramble, caters mainly to rock climbers and backpackers. The limestone cliffs that define Railay are world-class sport climbing terrain, with routes ranging from beginner level (starting from around 5a) to elite grades above 8a. Several climbing schools operate on-site offering full-day instruction for beginners. Inland, a short jungle path leads to a viewpoint saddle between the east and west beaches — the 30-minute climb is steep and slippery but rewards with a panorama of both coastlines simultaneously. Longtail boats from Krabi Town run the 15-minute crossing regularly from early morning; the fare is around 100 baht per person.
