Iskanderkul Guesthouse

Iskanderkul Guesthouse occupies a position at the edge of Iskanderkul Lake in the Fann Mountains, a dramatic alpine region in Sughd province roughly 90 kilometres south of Khujand and about 120 kilometres from Dushanbe via the Anzob Tunnel. The lake itself sits at approximately 2,195 metres elevation and is renowned for its deep turquoise colouring, a product of glacial melt water from the surrounding peaks. The name translates as Alexander's Lake, referencing a Central Asian legend that Alexander the Great's horse Bucephalus drowned in its depths. The surrounding terrain offers some of the most accessible high-altitude scenery in Tajikistan without requiring the logistics of a Pamir Highway expedition.

The guesthouse is family-run and occupies a simple structure close to the lake shore. Rooms are basic — beds with warm blankets, shared bathroom facilities with intermittent hot water — but the setting compensates generously: most rooms have windows or a terrace position that looks across the water toward rocky ridgelines. The lake's colour shifts throughout the day from pale green in early morning to deep indigo in afternoon light.

Meals are home-cooked and included in the nightly rate: breakfast with eggs, bread, and tea, and an evening dinner centred on lagman, plov, or grilled meat. The family matriarch manages the kitchen and portions are generous. Packed lunches can be prepared for hikers making early starts.

The guesthouse is one of several accommodation options in the Iskanderkul area and functions as a practical base for the main lake circuit hike (approximately 8 km, half-day), the Fann River waterfalls trail nearby, and longer routes into the surrounding Fan Mountain valleys. The family can point guests toward the established walking paths and advise on conditions after recent rain.
