The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall sits at No. 505, Section 4, Renai Road in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan, in a landscaped park east of the Taipei 101 area. It honours Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925), the revolutionary who led the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and became the first provisional president of the Republic of China in 1912. Construction took place in the early 1970s under the architect Wang Da-hong, and the hall was completed in 1972 for the Republic's anniversary celebrations. The building has sweeping yellow-glazed roof eaves in a modernised palace style with open colonnades, a design that blends traditional Chinese forms with reinforced-concrete construction. At the centre of the main hall is a large bronze seated statue of Sun, about six metres high, which is guarded by uniformed sentries whose changing ceremony takes place on the hour and draws steady crowds. Surrounding galleries hold permanent exhibits on Sun's life, writings, the 1911 revolution, and his Three Principles of the People, together with rotating art and cultural displays. A calligraphy hall, auditorium, and library complete the complex. The grounds, Zhongshan Park, include ponds, pavilions, and shaded paths used daily by locals for exercise, kite flying, and tai chi. The hall also hosts concerts and exhibitions that attract Taipei residents who may never visit the memorial itself. Maintenance of the roof tiles and public spaces is carried out by the managing agency, and the site remains in good condition. It is a short walk from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall MRT Station, and an easy pairing with the Taipei 101 area and the Eslite and Xinyi shopping district.
