Valais Photography Guide 2025

Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Valais.

Valais is Switzerland's third-largest and most dramatically alpine canton, home to 40 of the Alps' 52 four-thousand-metre peaks including the iconic Matterhorn. With the driest climate in Switzerland, over 300 sunny days a year, and the country's largest wine-growing region, it offers an extraordinary blend of high-altitude adventure, luxury resorts, and centuries-old culture.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Valais.

1

Riffelsee Lake — Matterhorn Reflection

📸 Early morning (golden hour)landscape / reflection

The small alpine lake at Rotenboden station (2,757m) offers the most iconic photograph in Switzerland — a perfect reflection of the Matterhorn in its glassy surface. Completely worth the early train up the Gornergrat Railway.

Photo tip: Take the first train of the day (around 7 AM) and arrive before the wind picks up — by 9 AM the reflection is often disturbed. Late August has floating wildflowers in the lake.
2

Gornergrat Summit (3,089m)

📸 Sunrisepanoramic landscape

The terrace at the top of the Gornergrat Railway offers a 360-degree panorama of 29 four-thousand-metre peaks including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and the Gorner Glacier. One of the most spectacular viewpoints in Europe.

Photo tip: Stay overnight in the Kulmhotel Gornergrat for sunrise photographs when the peak crowds haven't arrived — the Matterhorn turns pink-red in the alpenglow.
3

Aletsch Glacier from Bettmerhorn (2,872m)

📸 Morningglacier / landscape

The cable car from Bettmeralp reaches the Bettmerhorn with a sweeping view down the full 23km length of the Aletsch Glacier — the Alps' longest — curving dramatically through a wilderness of rock and ice.

Photo tip: The light is best in the morning before haze builds up; a polarising filter dramatically improves the clarity of the glacier ice.
4

Zermatt Village Panorama (Kirchplatz)

📸 Late afternoon / golden hourvillage / architecture

The view from the church square of Zermatt looking up the main street toward the Matterhorn captures the quintessential Swiss alpine village photograph — timber chalets, church spire, and the iconic pyramid peak.

Photo tip: Position yourself by the historic chapel for a foreground frame; the light falls perfectly on the Matterhorn in the late afternoon.
5

Val d'Anniviers — Lac de Moiry

📸 Morninglake / glacier / landscape

The turquoise Lac de Moiry surrounded by moraine and glacier is one of the most dramatic and photogenic landscapes in Valais, entirely off the main tourist circuit. Drive to the dam for easy access.

Photo tip: The reflection of the Moiry Glacier in the lake is spectacular on windless summer mornings; combine with a hike toward the glacier for close-up ice photographs.
6

Sion from Tourbillon Castle

📸 Late afternoonlandscape / aerial

The view from the ruined Tourbillon Castle looking down over Sion's old town, the Rhône Valley, and the terraced vineyards is the definitive wide-angle photograph of the Valais capital.

Photo tip: Shoot in late afternoon for warm directional light on the castle stones and valley below; winter gives a clear, frost-sharpened view.
7

Bisse de Clavau — Vineyard Trail

📸 Autumn (September–October)landscape / vineyard

The ancient bisse irrigation channel snaking through autumn-gold terraced vineyards above Sion is a uniquely Valaisan scene — particularly spectacular during the grape harvest when workers fill the vine rows.

Photo tip: Shoot in late September when the vines turn gold and the harvest is underway; the path above gives a sweeping wide-angle view of the valley.
8

Grimentz Village

📸 Morning or evening lightvillage / architecture

Grimentz is one of the most photogenic traditional villages in Switzerland, with dark timber chalets, ancient stone fountains, and carved wooden granaries against a backdrop of glacier-capped peaks.

Photo tip: Early morning before tourists arrive gives you the cobblestone squares completely to yourself; look for the smoke rising from chimney breakfast fires.
9

Mont-Fort Summit View (Verbier, 3,330m)

📸 Morningpanoramic / mountain

From the highest point reachable by cable car in Verbier, the panorama takes in Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin, and dozens of four-thousand-metre peaks in a single frame. Few views match this anywhere in the Alps.

Photo tip: Take the first morning cable car for crystal-clear air and mountain shadow gradients; telephoto lens essential for peak details.
10

Saas-Fee — Fee Glacier and Village

📸 Early morningglacier / village

The Fee Glacier descends dramatically toward the car-free village of Saas-Fee, creating a unique composition of traditional timber chalets against a wall of blue ice and surrounding 4,000m peaks.

Photo tip: Position yourself on the east side of the village before 9 AM for golden light hitting the glacier face and village rooftops simultaneously.

Photography Tips

Get better shots in Valais.

📸

A wide-angle lens (16–24mm) is essential for glacier panoramas and mountain valley compositions

📸

A telephoto lens (70–300mm) allows dramatic peak compression shots — excellent for Matterhorn from Zermatt village

📸

A polarising filter dramatically improves sky contrast and removes glare from alpine lake surfaces

📸

Carry extra batteries — cold temperatures drain batteries 3× faster at altitude

📸

The Matterhorn is most photogenic from the Swiss (north/east) face — the classic triangular profile is seen from Zermatt

📸

For Riffelsee reflections, arrive before 8 AM and wait for absolute calm — even light wind disturbs the reflection

📸

Autumn (September–October) is the secret season for photographers: golden vineyards, clear skies, and far fewer people at popular viewpoints
