Valais Photography Guide 2025
Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Valais.
Valais is Switzerland's third-largest and most dramatically alpine canton, home to 40 of the Alps' 52 four-thousand-metre peaks including the iconic Matterhorn. With the driest climate in Switzerland, over 300 sunny days a year, and the country's largest wine-growing region, it offers an extraordinary blend of high-altitude adventure, luxury resorts, and centuries-old culture.
Top 10 Photo Spots
The most photogenic locations in Valais.
Riffelsee Lake — Matterhorn Reflection
The small alpine lake at Rotenboden station (2,757m) offers the most iconic photograph in Switzerland — a perfect reflection of the Matterhorn in its glassy surface. Completely worth the early train up the Gornergrat Railway.
Gornergrat Summit (3,089m)
The terrace at the top of the Gornergrat Railway offers a 360-degree panorama of 29 four-thousand-metre peaks including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and the Gorner Glacier. One of the most spectacular viewpoints in Europe.
Aletsch Glacier from Bettmerhorn (2,872m)
The cable car from Bettmeralp reaches the Bettmerhorn with a sweeping view down the full 23km length of the Aletsch Glacier — the Alps' longest — curving dramatically through a wilderness of rock and ice.
Zermatt Village Panorama (Kirchplatz)
The view from the church square of Zermatt looking up the main street toward the Matterhorn captures the quintessential Swiss alpine village photograph — timber chalets, church spire, and the iconic pyramid peak.
Val d'Anniviers — Lac de Moiry
The turquoise Lac de Moiry surrounded by moraine and glacier is one of the most dramatic and photogenic landscapes in Valais, entirely off the main tourist circuit. Drive to the dam for easy access.
Sion from Tourbillon Castle
The view from the ruined Tourbillon Castle looking down over Sion's old town, the Rhône Valley, and the terraced vineyards is the definitive wide-angle photograph of the Valais capital.
Bisse de Clavau — Vineyard Trail
The ancient bisse irrigation channel snaking through autumn-gold terraced vineyards above Sion is a uniquely Valaisan scene — particularly spectacular during the grape harvest when workers fill the vine rows.
Grimentz Village
Grimentz is one of the most photogenic traditional villages in Switzerland, with dark timber chalets, ancient stone fountains, and carved wooden granaries against a backdrop of glacier-capped peaks.
Mont-Fort Summit View (Verbier, 3,330m)
From the highest point reachable by cable car in Verbier, the panorama takes in Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin, and dozens of four-thousand-metre peaks in a single frame. Few views match this anywhere in the Alps.
Saas-Fee — Fee Glacier and Village
The Fee Glacier descends dramatically toward the car-free village of Saas-Fee, creating a unique composition of traditional timber chalets against a wall of blue ice and surrounding 4,000m peaks.

Photography Tips
Get better shots in Valais.
A wide-angle lens (16–24mm) is essential for glacier panoramas and mountain valley compositions
A telephoto lens (70–300mm) allows dramatic peak compression shots — excellent for Matterhorn from Zermatt village
A polarising filter dramatically improves sky contrast and removes glare from alpine lake surfaces
Carry extra batteries — cold temperatures drain batteries 3× faster at altitude
The Matterhorn is most photogenic from the Swiss (north/east) face — the classic triangular profile is seen from Zermatt
For Riffelsee reflections, arrive before 8 AM and wait for absolute calm — even light wind disturbs the reflection
Autumn (September–October) is the secret season for photographers: golden vineyards, clear skies, and far fewer people at popular viewpoints
Photography Etiquette
Respect local customs while capturing memories.
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Offer to show them the photo.
Never photograph military installations, government buildings, airports, or security checkpoints.
Some religious sites prohibit photography or require fees. Always check before shooting.
Be discrete with expensive camera gear in crowded areas. Don't obstruct traffic or pathways for photos.
