The Rigi Panorama Walk traverses the summit ridge of Mount Rigi — historically called the Queen of Mountains — in Central Switzerland, offering a 360-degree panorama that takes in Lakes Lucerne, Zug, and Lauerz, the Swiss Plateau, and the peaks of the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps. The route covers approximately 8 kilometres with a gentle 100-metre gain along a broad ridgeline, making it one of the most accessible high-Alpine experiences in Switzerland.

Gentle ridgeline walk on the Queen of Mountains offering 360-degree panoramas from the summit plateau. Historic trail first walked by Goethe and Twain, taking in lake and Alpine views.

Rigi Kulm summit at 1,797 metres is the starting point and is reached by one of two historic rack railways: the Vitznau–Rigi rack railway — Switzerland's first, opened in 1871 — from Lake Lucerne, or the Arth–Rigi line from Arth-Goldau. A cable car also ascends from Weggis on the lake shore. The Swiss Travel Pass covers both rack railways. Driving is not possible to the summit; car parks are available at Vitznau, Arth-Goldau, and Weggis. From the summit, the path descends the western ridge through Staffel at 1,604 metres and Rigi Kaltbad at 1,438 metres before the classic descent continues toward Weggis at 430 metres on the lake shore. The trail surface is generally compacted gravel and well-worn earth, wide enough for easy walking side by side. The ridge is largely exposed, with one section of light woodland near Rigi Kaltbad providing shade. Slopes are gentle throughout; there are no exposed drops or technical sections. The historic pilgrimage chapel at Rigi Kaltbad is a notable landmark mid-route, and a mineral spring at Kaltbad has attracted visitors since the medieval period. Both Goethe and Mark Twain described walking this ridge, and heritage trail markers at the summit commemorate their visits. Mountain restaurants operate at the summit, at Staffel, and at Rigi Kaltbad, with the Kaltbad spa hotel offering one of the finest panoramic terrace settings in Central Switzerland. Water from the natural spring at Rigi Kaltbad is potable; emergency services are accessible via the rack railway at any point along the route.

Tips for visiting

  • Take the rack railway to the summit and walk down to Weggis; the descent saves 1,200 metres of ascent and allows the panorama to be enjoyed without the effort of climbing.
  • Arrive at the summit before 8 am to experience the sunrise over the Alps before day-tripper crowds arrive on the first rack railway.
  • Check the Rigi Bahnen website for live cloud and visibility conditions before travelling — the summit sits in fog several days per month even in summer.
  • The Weggis cable car provides a fast exit from Rigi Kaltbad if weather deteriorates, without needing to descend all the way to the lake on foot.
  • Wear light layers; the ridgeline is exposed to wind even on warm summer days, but the descent to Weggis drops back to full lake-level warmth.

When to visit

Mid-May to late October for snow-free trail conditions; September and October bring dramatic fog inversions at sunrise that produce some of the finest panorama conditions of the year.

Accessibility

The ridgeline path from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad is relatively flat and wide, and sections near the summit are manageable for visitors with limited mobility. The rack railway provides step-free access to the summit platform. A limited wheelchair-accessible path connects Rigi Kaltbad station to the spa hotel; a full walking circuit is not possible in a wheelchair.

Frequently asked questions

How do visitors reach the top of Rigi?

Two historic rack railways serve the summit: the Vitznau–Rigi line departs from Vitznau on Lake Lucerne, and the Arth–Rigi line departs from Arth-Goldau. A cable car also operates from Weggis. Journey times are approximately 35 minutes from Vitznau and 45 minutes from Arth-Goldau. The Swiss Travel Pass covers both rack railways.

Is the Rigi Panorama Walk suitable for young children?

Yes. The gentle, well-graded path from the summit to Rigi Kaltbad is one of the most family-friendly high-altitude walks in Switzerland. Children who can manage 3–4 kilometres will handle the ridgeline section comfortably, and the rack railway removes the need for any strenuous climbing.

What is the best season for the sunrise walk on Rigi?

Late September and October offer the most dramatic sunrises, when fog inversions below the summit create a cloud-sea effect with the Alps rising above. Summer provides longer days and warm conditions. The view from Rigi Kulm at sunrise is considered one of Switzerland's classic mountain experiences.

Are there refreshment options along the route?

Restaurants operate at Rigi Kulm summit, Staffel, and Rigi Kaltbad throughout the hiking season. The Kaltbad spa hotel terrace restaurant is the most celebrated dining stop on the route. Kiosk service may be limited outside peak season in July and August.

Can Rigi be visited in winter?

Yes. The rack railways operate year-round and Rigi has a small ski area plus winter hiking trails. However, the panorama walk in its summer form requires snow-free conditions; from December to March walkers need appropriate winter footwear or snowshoes for the ridgeline.
