STF Abisko Mountain Lodge, formally known as Abisko Turiststation, is operated by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF/Svenska Turistföreningen) and sits at 385 metres above sea level in Swedish Lapland, 98 kilometres west of Kiruna. The station lies within Abisko National Park and is positioned above the treeline at the southern shore of Lake Torneträsk, a 70-kilometre-long glacial lake stretching toward the Norwegian border. The area is celebrated as one of Sweden's most reliable Northern Lights locations, a status it owes to an unusual local microclimate — a rainshadow effect created by the surrounding fell topography produces significantly lower cloud cover than adjacent regions, even when the wider sky is overcast.
The facility has served as a base for mountain travellers since the early twentieth century and the buildings retain the utilitarian character of a serious mountain station rather than a resort aesthetic. Accommodation spans dormitory rooms and simple bunk-bed cabins suited to hikers and backpackers, private rooms with shared facilities, and more comfortable en-suite rooms for guests who want additional privacy after a day outdoors. The Kungsleden — the King's Trail, Sweden's most famous long-distance hiking route — begins at Abisko, and the lodge functions as the natural start and end point for through-hikers tackling the 440-kilometre trail south to Hemavan.
A restaurant on site serves hearty Nordic meals calibrated to outdoor activity, with substantial breakfast buffets and set dinner menus drawing on Scandinavian staples. A sauna, gear drying room, and a small provisions shop selling maps, fuel canisters, and trail food round out the facilities. The Aurora Sky Station, operated by STF and accessed by a short chair lift to 900 metres elevation, offers guided Northern Lights evenings on clear nights during winter and midnight sun experiences in summer.
