Climate Overview

South Korea has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid with a monsoon season (jangma) from late June to late July bringing heavy rainfall. Winters are cold and dry with snowfall particularly in the northeast and mountains. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons with mild temperatures, clear skies, and spectacular natural scenery — cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn attract millions of visitors.

🌸 Spring

March-May

Korea's most beloved season with cherry blossoms (late March to mid-April), azalea mountains, and mild temperatures perfect for sightseeing. Peak domestic and international tourism season.

Tips: Book accommodation 3-4 months in advance for cherry blossom peak. Layer clothing as mornings remain cool until May.

June-August

Hot and humid with monsoon rains from late June to late July (jangma). Post-monsoon August is hot but drier. Beach season at Haeundae and Jeju Island. Outdoor festivals abound.

Tips: Pack an umbrella and light rain jacket for the monsoon period. Stay hydrated and avoid midday sightseeing in August heat. Air conditioning is ubiquitous.

September-November

Korea's second peak season with spectacular autumn foliage (mid-October peak), pleasant temperatures, and clear skies. Festival season including Busan Film Festival and Seoul Fireworks.

Tips: Best hiking season — trails at Seoraksan and Hallasan are at their most beautiful. Book mountain accommodation early for October foliage peak.

December-February

Cold and dry with significant snowfall at higher elevations and the northeast (Gangwon Province). Seoul winters are cold (around 0°C) but manageable. Ski resorts at Pyeongchang and Yongpyong open.

Tips: Pack warm layers, thermal underwear for mountain areas. Heating is excellent indoors. Ski resorts offer great winter sport options 2 hours from Seoul.
