South Africa Weather & Climate Guide 2026

South Africa's climate in numbers — the months that flatter it, the ones to avoid, and what to pack.

South Africa offers an extraordinary blend of wildlife safaris, stunning landscapes from Table Mountain to the Garden Route, vibrant cities, and a rich cultural heritage. From world-class wine regions to pristine beaches and the iconic Kruger National Park, it's a destination that captivates every type of traveler.

South Africa has a remarkably diverse climate across its regions. Cape Town and the Western Cape experience a Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers (November-March) and cool, wet winters (June-August). The interior highveld (Johannesburg at 1,700m altitude) has hot summers with afternoon thunderstorms and mild, dry winters. The subtropical KwaZulu-Natal coast (Durban) is warm year-round with a wet summer. The Kruger Park region has hot summers and mild, dry winters — the dry season (June-August) is best for game viewing as vegetation thins and animals gather at waterholes.
